I may have taken the only answer, but the Countach is almost unknown without its LP-400 80’s-tastic adornments. In original trim, it actually has a sleek, almost 70’s look to it.

Mustangs. OMG Mustangs.
Edit - known MORE for. Sorry. I saw “special editions” and typed Mustang as fast as I could.

Thanks for asking this question, even just looking at the comments right now I’ve having so many mindblown moments at so many cars that are really better known for their special editions. I can’t think of one to add though.

Easy. The Nissan Skyline.

No you still got it right. It’s not the V6 or the 4 cylinders people think of when they hear the word ‘Mustang’.

Does the GT count as a special edition? The only ones I can really think of are the GT500 and the BOSS 302, which actually aren’t that well known outside of car circles.

People always forget that the Lancia Delta was actually a pretty crap-tastic car, all things considered.

On my phone so no pic, but Mitsubishi Lancer and to a lesser extent, Subaru Impreza.

Are there any Veyrons that aren’t a special edition? Seems like they’re all called “Bugatti Veyron Light Blue Edition” and such.

Yeah, for a while they were. Then Bugatti realised that the poeple that buy a 2 million dollar car want a bespoke vehicle. So they took the order and gave every one a name, pretty much.

Mitsubishi Starion TSi/ Chrysler Conquest TSi.
The average non-enthusiast wouldn’t know what it is, but even most enthusiasts don’t know it also cam without the widebody, spoilers, the kickass wheels.

The Pontiac Firebird:
“What kind of car do you have?” “A Firebird.” “Ooh, a Trans Am!” “No, a Firebird.” “Isn’t that the same thing?” “No, all Trans Ams are Firebirds, but not all Firebirds are Trans Ams.” “*blank look like you’re the one who’s crazy here*”

GT500, GT350, SVT Cobra, SVO, Boss 302, GT/CS, Bullitt, Mach 1, King Cobra, etc

Half of all ““Trans Ams”” on autotrader are actually just Firebirds. Not Trans Am clones. Just Firebirds.

I know it’s just me but.. The pre 80s-tastic “Countach” did nothing for me.
Now, to answer your question. Every damn “Muscle Car” ever made.
Seriously, people seem to think that the streets of everytown USA in the 60s was teeming with Hemis, 427s, 454s and the like.
Reality was that 6 bangers and low power small blocks were the majority.
(Kinja mobile is being a dick right now.. Otherwise I’d slap a nice Road Runner pic in there.)

The entire Jeep lineup.
Seriously, every single car has at least 3 special editions

Many remember the 037, not as many the normal Beta Montecarlo/Scorpion.

That green Countach isn’t actually the normal LP400 but the 2nd produced example and still pretty much a prototype. There’s plenty of other small details but it’s very easy to spot as it used 2 piece side windows instead of the normal 3 piece setup. The only other car that used the same side window style was crash tested and destroyed.
That’s my favorite Countach btw.
